The head of design Laurens van den Acker introduced 6 life-cycles as part of their design strategy, "Love" is one of them. Together with Evita Goettsch I participated in the Renault Design Award in which we were assigned to design a visionary concept suited to the life-cycle "Love". We designed a future-oriented 1,5 person car concept, inspired by the romantic first encounter before falling in love. The asymmetrical car is able to transform into a symmetrical one when another car attaches; in this way, the dating principle is facilitated while being on the road. It's a design to fill the gap of the Renault "Love" concept cars DeZir and TreZor, which both present the other love stages. The design process consisted of many aspects: visual- and tactile form exploration, user-research, digital 3D-modelling. This design was the winning concept of Renault Design Award 2017.
Summary
The theme Love is based on the design philosophy of Laurens van den Acker (Renault's senior vice president of corporate design). The design concepts of Renault within this theme (Renault TreZor and DeZir) are all based on a love-couple who already are in a relationship. The thrilling moment before falling in love wasn't translated yet. Therefore our 1,5 person car concept does reflect the first meeting before -possibly- falling in love.
The actual meet-up between people is facilitated by means of the possibility to merge: two vehicles can become one (a-)symmetrical-shaped vehicle,
Background
whereafter the glass side doors slide open: creating one big meet-up space while people can proceed their journeys.
Perfect first dates aren't common, but they might take a romantic or erotic turn; therefore the analogy for inspiration of the shape of the concept is inspired on the woman's body: imperfections of a body are reflected by the asymmetrical shape; feminine, sensual curves flow throughout entire exterior and interior.
